I have yet to listen to the lecture, but I really appreciate the distinction between translation and rendition, an idea that seems even different than a paraphrase.

I am part of circles that routinely speak ill of the Message. I might agree if we think of it as a translation, but once it is read as a supplement, I find it energizes my reading.

It seems with "rendition" you open yourself to greater freedom.

Thanks, Kirk. I agree with you about the Message.

I think it's unfortunate that we have to clarify what we do in order to caution people. However, I understand that "renditioning" a psalm carries a weight – considering the subject matter- that is solemn. One would not want readers to ascribe a weight in balance between darkling Psalms and inspired biblical text. Moreso I feel at once chastised and enlightened. Irritated, but reassured. Anything I hear or read concerning God I take the responsibility for myself; between myself and God. Though I do believe the words of others can clarify our thoughts and feelings about God. They can also act as a source of relief ... we are not alone. I'm sad you felt you had to write this. But I also admire you for writing it and understand more why I admire your writing. I cannot promise you how I will interpret your writing. But I can promise that I will not place the burden of its truth or meaning on you, but understand that it's an exchange of ideas between yourself and me, as the reader. It's not your job to secure your readers' understanding of every word and structure you use. It's a joint effort.

No worries, Julie. I did not mean for this post to be read as a criticism of anything. It is not even really a reaction to how people are receiving the Darkling Psalter. I have been intending to write more about my process and my view of the Bible for a long time. Like I said, I am delighted when readers enjoy these renditions and take meaning from them.

Thanks for reading and thanks for your comment.

Oh goodness! Thank you so much for replying. I did not expect that. Words are so powerful and I have to tell you that until reading your renditions of the Psalms I thought David was the most despicable man and had no desire to read the songs written by such a man. Your poems led me to the Psalms and to rereading the Bible and discovering David and God in a different way. I still find your poems More beautiful! I cannot apologize for that. However, I know now in my heart that God is just and see David more clearly. That is the power of words.
