Some favourite lines. Good contrast between thistledown and sinew, and "slow lathe" gives me just the feeling of a lathe slowly lathing, with that spondee. Really like that poem—dense and rich imagery.
Riddle years that half went mad. Love this, as it reminds me of Nebuchadnezzar in Psalm 2!
Also, Andy, I know there are several references to England in your other poems. Are you a Brit or an American? Because I'm reading a series right now (Tunnels) that's written by a pair of Brits (Roderick Gordon an Brian Williams) and there are these two animals (called Hunters) that perfectly embody the following lines:
Christ behind us, hunting back,
Christ among us, prowling wilder. Ahhh, Bartleby and Colly!
"Where I go, a long shadow follows"
"Thistledown and sinew, slow lathe"

Thanks, Liz.
I have had A Horse and His Boy on my mind lately, so of course the line "Christ among us, prowling wilder" fits right in.
I love horse and his boy, i didn't see that tho. Nice catch, Reagan!

Good catch, Micah. I'm an American who lived in England for seven years.
Also, "Thistledown" reminds me of your Psalm 8 poem.
